Star Trek – A Warp Speed History – Part II

Whilst the cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation were going about their adventures in cinemas worldwide, television audiences were introduced to yet another Star Trek series. Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, which ran for seven seasons from 1993 to 1999, was set on board a space station rather than a starship, and explored ideas which none of the earlier Star Trek shows had tackled.

The first female Captain that Star Trek fans were introduced to was Captain Kathryn Janeway who was in charge of the USS Voyager. Star Trek: Voyager overlapped with the broadcast of Deep Space Nine, running for seven seasons from 1995 to 2001, and the timeline of the series also overlapped the DS9 timeline. The Star Trek: Voyager crew enjoyed huge popularity among fans of the franchise, with Captain Janeway, Commander Chakotay and ex-Borg drone Seven of Nine becoming household names.

Star Trek: Enterprise was a television series that ran from 2001 to 2005 and focused on Captain Jonathan Archer as he took the helm of the Enterprise, which was the first craft capable of travelling at speeds up to warp five. The action here all takes place before the timeline of the original Star Trek television series, and that made it possible for the series to cover various expositional themes which shed new light on events that were to take place and/or become apparent in the future.

Uhura slotsThe 2009 release of an eleventh movie simply entitled Star Trek was effectively a complete reboot of the cinema franchise. The story focused on the crew of the USS Enterprise that had first captured the public imagination in the 1960’s, namely Captain Kirk, Mr Spock, Scotty, Uhuru and so on, but with a brand new group of actors in those roles. That said, Leonard Nimoy was also able to reprise his role as Mr Spock due to the plot involving a young Spock and a Spock from further down the timeline. This Star Trek movie had a budget of $150 million and grossed over $385 million, so it is no surprise that a sequel is planned for release in 2012.
